In South Africa, you need a skippers license if you are the person in command of a vessel with a motor output of 15kW (approximately 20HP) or more on any public waterway. This applies to dams, rivers, harbours, and the coast.
Vessels That Require a Skippers License
- Power boats and motor boats with motors 15kW+
- Jet skis and personal watercraft (PWC) with motors 15kW+
- Motorised fishing craft above the threshold
- Any vessel with an auxiliary engine above the threshold
Vessels That May Not Require One
- Rowing boats and non-motorised craft
- Vessels with motors under 15kW (confirm locally)
- Some private waterways may have different rules
