All Your Questions, Answered

Do I need a skippers license for a jet ski?
Yes, if the jet ski's engine output is 15kW or more. Most modern jet skis exceed this threshold. See our dedicated guide: Can you drive a jet ski without a skippers license?
Can my wife/husband drive the boat with my skippers license?
No. A skippers license is personal to the holder. Your spouse or any other person in command of the vessel must have their own valid skippers license if the vessel meets the threshold.
What is the difference between an inland and offshore skippers license?
An inland license covers dams, rivers, and other inland waterways. An offshore or coastal license covers sea areas and is a different category with additional requirements. Most Gauteng boaters only need an inland license.
Do I need to renew my skippers license?
In South Africa, a standard skippers license does not have an expiry date and is valid indefinitely unless suspended or revoked. Always confirm the current rules with the relevant authority as regulations can change.
Can I operate a boat as a passenger without a license?
Yes. Only the person in command of the vessel needs a skippers license. Passengers are not required to hold one.
What if I already have an overseas boat license?
A foreign boating license is not automatically recognised in South Africa. If you plan to operate a vessel on South African public waterways, you should obtain a South African skippers license. Confirm with the relevant authority for your specific situation.
Is there a practical exam on the water?
Most skippers courses include a practical component that may involve time on or near the water. The extent and format of this varies by provider. Ask when you book.
Can I do the skippers course online?
Some providers offer the theory component online, which can be convenient. However, the practical assessment typically needs to be done in person. Confirm with the provider what their online offering covers.
What happens if I fail the exam?
Most providers allow candidates to re-sit the exam. You'll typically be advised on which areas to focus on before attempting again. Failing once is not uncommon and doesn't prevent you from eventually obtaining your license.
Do I need a license to tow a water skier?
If the vessel towing the water skier meets the 15kW motor threshold, yes — the person in command needs a skippers license. Towing activities also have additional requirements around observer passengers.
