Buoyancy Certificates – Fitting & Certification Gauteng
All South African vessels must have sufficient buoyancy — by law. We inspect existing buoyancy, fit foam to vessels that need it, and issue buoyancy certificates across the Vaal Triangle and Gauteng.
Why Buoyancy Certification Matters
Under the Merchant Shipping (National Small Vessel Safety) Regulations, 2007, all vessels must have sufficient buoyancy. This is a fundamental safety requirement — a vessel with inadequate buoyancy can capsize and sink rapidly in the event of an incident, with potentially fatal consequences.
Buoyancy compliance is assessed as part of the annual Certificate of Fitness inspection, but it can also be certified independently — particularly when buying or selling a vessel, or when a vessel has been modified or repaired.
What We Do
Buoyancy Inspection
We assess your vessel's existing buoyancy material, placement, and compliance against SAMSA standards.
Buoyancy Fitting
For vessels with no or insufficient buoyancy, we supply and install the appropriate foam in the correct areas.
Certification
Once compliant, we issue a buoyancy certificate confirming the vessel meets regulatory requirements.
Buoyancy Requirements Under South African Law
The buoyancy requirements for your vessel depend on its category, size, and intended use. Key points:
- All vessels — including those under the Certificate of Fitness threshold — must have sufficient buoyancy
- Buoyancy foam must be placed in the correct locations to provide positive buoyancy when the vessel is fully flooded
- Deteriorated, compressed, or waterlogged buoyancy foam does not meet the standard — it must be in good condition
- Modifications to a vessel may affect its buoyancy requirements and trigger the need for reassessment
Buoyancy Certificates and Vessel Sales
If you are selling a vessel, a valid buoyancy certificate confirms compliance and protects you from liability. Buyers are increasingly aware of their rights — and rightly so. A vessel without buoyancy documentation is a harder sell and a potential legal exposure.
If you are buying a vessel, always request evidence of buoyancy compliance before proceeding. A vessel sold without disclosure of buoyancy non-compliance is being sold illegally. Our team can conduct a pre-purchase buoyancy inspection for buyers anywhere in Gauteng.
Fitting Buoyancy to Older Vessels
Many older boats — particularly those built before modern safety regulations — were never fitted with buoyancy foam, or the foam that was fitted has deteriorated over decades. This is one of the most common compliance issues we see across the Vaal and Gauteng waterways.
We can supply and fit closed-cell buoyancy foam to older vessels of all types, ensuring correct placement and volume for the vessel's category. Once complete, we issue the full buoyancy certificate and documentation.
